About

Kate Smithson

After studying Biology at university with a particular focus on plant biology, Kate had a career working in arts marketing within numerous Yorkshire theatres.  During a career break to have children and with a move to a house with a large established garden, Kate rediscovered her love of plants, gardening and the outdoors and decided to change her focus towards these passions.

Whilst working in some of the best known gardens in Yorkshire, including Harewood House, Goddards (National Trust) and Middlethorpe Hall, Kate completed the RHS Level 2 Diploma in the Principles and Practices of Horticulture.  After this, she successfully secured a place on the WRAGS (Work and Retrain as a Gardener) scheme, a structured gardening apprenticeship scheme, working at the stunning gardens of Rudding Park Hotel and Spa in Harrogate.

Having been involved in aspects of garden design whilst at Harewood House and at Rudding Park (as well as in her own garden) Kate decided to formally study garden design and gained her diploma with the Yorkshire School of Garden Design.
